Why Get a Flu Shot This Year?

Influenza is more than a bad cold. In a typical season, the flu sends tens of thousands of Canadians to hospital and claims thousands of lives — the vast majority of them in older adults, young children, and people with underlying health conditions. The virus mutates every year, which is why a new vaccine is formulated each fall to match the strains expected to circulate.

Getting vaccinated protects you directly, but it also protects the people around you who may be too young, too sick, or otherwise unable to be vaccinated themselves. In a close-knit community like Callander, that matters.

The most common flu complications include:

  • Pneumonia (bacterial or viral)
  • Worsening of chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, and heart disease
  • Dehydration, especially in young children and older adults
  • Hospitalization lasting days to weeks
  • Rarely, death — particularly in adults 65 and older

The flu shot significantly reduces your risk of all of the above. It is not 100% effective in every season, but even a partial match reduces the severity of illness if you do get sick.

The influenza vaccine is updated each year. Last year's shot does not protect you this season — a new dose is needed annually.

Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

Ontario's Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP) provides the flu vaccine free of charge to everyone 6 months of age and older who has a valid Ontario health card. That includes:

  • Children 6 months and older
  • Adults of all ages, including seniors 65+
  • Pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
  • People with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, or kidney disease
  • Residents and staff of long-term care homes
  • Healthcare workers, teachers, and anyone who has regular close contact with vulnerable people

Even healthy adults who rarely get sick benefit from vaccination — and help reduce the spread to family members who are more vulnerable.

No Appointment Needed at Our Pharmacy

There is no need to book ahead. Walk into Callander IDA Pharmacy at 93 Main Street North any time during pharmacy hours and ask for your flu shot. Our pharmacists will do a quick health check to confirm the vaccine is appropriate for you, and the injection itself takes just a minute or two.

If you know you're coming during a busy time — weekend afternoons and early evenings in October tend to be particularly active — a quick call to (705) 752-3388 can help us have everything ready when you arrive.

What to bring:

  • Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
  • A list of any current medications or allergies, if you have one
  • Wear a short-sleeved shirt or something with easy access to your upper arm

Pharmacists Are Trained Vaccine Administrators

Ontario pharmacists complete formal training in injection technique and management of adverse reactions before they are authorized to administer vaccines. At Callander IDA Pharmacy, flu shots are given in a private space by a trained pharmacist who will answer any questions you have before, during, and after the injection.

After your shot, we ask that you remain in the pharmacy for approximately 15 minutes as a routine precaution. Serious allergic reactions to the flu vaccine are extremely rare, but we are fully equipped to respond if one occurs.

Common, mild side effects include:

  • Soreness or mild swelling at the injection site for 1–2 days
  • Low-grade fatigue or mild achiness for a day or so

These are signs that your immune system is responding — not that you have the flu. The flu vaccine does not contain live virus and cannot give you influenza.

Ontario pharmacists can administer the flu vaccine to patients 2 years of age and older. Children under 2 receive their vaccine through their doctor or public health unit.

When to Get Your Flu Shot

Flu vaccines in Ontario are typically available starting in late September or early October each year. The ideal time to get vaccinated is before the end of October, giving your body two weeks to build full immunity before the flu season peaks.

That said, getting vaccinated later in the season — even in January or February — is still worthwhile. Flu season can extend into March in Northern Ontario, and protection builds within two weeks of the injection regardless of when you receive it.

If you missed last year's shot or put it off, don't wait. Come in at any time the vaccine is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the flu shot free in Ontario?

Yes. The influenza vaccine is free for everyone 6 months of age and older who has a valid Ontario health card (OHIP). The pharmacy bills the province directly — there is no out-of-pocket cost for the vaccine itself.

Do I need an appointment for a flu shot at a pharmacy?

No appointment is needed at Callander IDA Pharmacy. Walk in any time during pharmacy hours. Calling ahead at (705) 752-3388 can help reduce your wait during busy periods, but it is never required.

Is it safe to get a flu shot if I have a mild cold?

In most cases, yes. A mild cold or runny nose without fever is not a reason to delay your flu shot. If you have a moderate or severe illness with a fever, it is generally better to wait until you feel better. Your pharmacist will review your health status before administering the vaccine.

When should I get my flu shot?

Ontario's flu season typically runs from October through March, with peak activity from December to February. Flu vaccines are usually available starting in October each year. Getting vaccinated early in the season — ideally by the end of October — gives your body time to build full immunity before flu activity peaks.

Can pharmacists give flu shots in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario pharmacists are trained and authorized to administer influenza vaccines to patients 2 years of age and older under the Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP). At Callander IDA Pharmacy, our pharmacists provide vaccinations in a private, comfortable setting.
